Better Together Mariposa will help any local club or organization design a web page using the same application that we used to create our web page.

We will do it for you for free and it can have a lot of functions. However, it will have limited design figures. We suggest looking at some of the pages we have created. If your group need a more professional looking web page or one with special figures, we suggest you contact one of our local web design businesses.

Even if you do decide on having someone else create your web page, we still want you and your group to be part of our collaborative community and utilize the other networking functions that we utilize and support.  These include"

1) online community calendars, webpages, wiki's and blogs,
2) event coordinating and planning
3) online registration, membership lists and other database apps
4) collaborative projects - including:
           shared documents,
           shared spreadsheet,
           shared presentation,
           shared project planning,
           online meeting,
and a host of other Web 2.0 applications.

See below to see how to get started.

You can use this "wiki " in at least 5 different ways:

  1. Be part of a running conversation by posting comments.
  2. On the CELEBRATING MARIPOSA page, you can grab an open cell and use it as a mini-web page for yourself or your organization.
  3. Also on the CELEBRATING MARIPOSA page, you can create a new "wiki" page and use it to promote your organization, share an idea, attach your materials (brochures, newletters, etc), or start your own discussion group.
  4. You can also use BETTER TOGETHER MARIPOSA to create a free (and easy) web page or a "member's only" wiki for your organization. See instruction in right panel.

What is a Wiki
A wiki is a web-based format that enables documents to be written collaboratively, in a simple markup language using a web browser. A single page in a wiki is referred to as a “wiki page”, whiles the entire body of pages, which are usually highly interconnected via hyperlinks, is "the wiki". A wiki is essentially a database for creating, browsing and searching information.

A defining characteristic of wiki techn ology is the ease with which pages can be created and updated. Generally, there is no review before modifications are accepted. Many wikis are open to the general public without the need to register any user account, however, wikis can also limited access for member which requires some log-in request.

Wiki Wiki bus at Honolulu International Airport

History

WikiWikiWeb n>was the first site to be called a wiki. Ward Cunningham started developing WikiWikiWeb> in 1994. It was named by Cunningham, who remembered a Honolulu International Airport counter employee telling him to take the so-called "Wiki Wiki" shuttle bus line that runs between the airport's terminals. According to Cunningham, "I chose wiki-wiki as an alliterative substitute for 'quick' and thereby avoided naming this stuff quick-web." Wiki Wiki is a Hawaiian-language word for fast. The word "wiki" is a shorter form of wiki wiki.
